Summary of “Cosmetic Surgery Can Boost Mood”
Two studies from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Plastic Surgery 2006 conference in San Francisco presented that having cosmetic surgery could improve people’s mood and their quality of life. Also it might help people quit taking antidepressant medications.
The study done by Bruce Freedman, M.D., a plastic surgeon in the Washington, D.C. showed that 31% of the patients from his sample group stop taking antidepressants medication after they took surgery six month later. Moreover, nearly 99% of the sample patients cited better self-esteem after the surgery.
Elvio Bueno Garci'a, M.D., PhD, a professor at the Federal University of Sao Paulo, Brazil has done the study on 35 women who had asymmetrical breasts and underwent surgery to create balance. The study found that the treatments provided improvement on the quality-of-life which evaluated with eight dimensions, such as physical and social functioning, degree of pain, and general health status. In addition, other surgeons say the findings of the two studies make sense.
Comparison
The first article is about evaluating different opinions from the society. And does it really worth undergo the surgery. It indicated that the people who have physical defect and the defect affect their life, they should take plastic surgery. But, apart from that, the other people especially those people that has good looking, they should consider it carefully before they take the surgery. There is a big risk of cosmetic surgery.
But the attitude of the second article is totally opposite. It believes that having cosmetic surgery could improve people’s quality of life and mood. Furthermore, the study done by the plastic surgeons showed that having plastic surgery could help people quit the antidepressant medications.
